Milestones: Activity Groups
- 1978, Early
Early in 1978, GROW (Gay Rights Organization of Waterloo) was formed.
In December, 1978, after several months of difficulties, the group split into two groups:
one called simply GROW (which devoted itself to arranging social activities for its
members), and another called
Gay Rights Organization of Waterloo (GROW) (which arranged some social activities,
published a magazine, ran a radio show and engaged in political action).
Both groups ran for several years. We are currently attempting to determine more dates.
- 1988, September
Around September 1988, Women Out Of Doors (WOODS) began. It sponsored a wide variety of
sports and recreational activities for women in the area. At some later point, it
changed its name to Women Opening Doors Socially (WOODS).
It is still in existence in 2011.
- 1994, November
In November of 1994, the Rainbow Chorus of Waterloo-Wellington was formed.
It is still in existence in 2011.
- 1996, July 26 (Saturday)
On July 26 (Saturday), 1996, the KW Front Runners began as a a running and swimming
group for the rainbow communities. It ran until about September 1997.
- 1999, September 12
On 1999, September 12, the Friends of Dorothy Bowling League was founded.
It is still in existence in 2011.
There were also a few other recreational and sports groups (such as the K-W Aquatics Club
and the Rainbow Hikers) for which we are attempting to establish dates of existence.
