2010, April 1 (Thursday) * K-W Record: A stir over women's kiss. Protest planned, group launched after pair told to stop kissing in café

A stir over women's kiss. Protest planned, group launched after pair told to stop kissing in café. This news article by Liz Monteiro (Record staff) reported on an incident the previous Monday (March 29) at Café 1842 in the Huether Hotel in Waterloo in which two women exchanged a closed-mouth kiss. The two women, Zoey Heath and Jenny Kirby, described the kiss as a 20-second peck on the lips. The owner, Sonia Adlys took offence to this and told them to stop. Adlys told the reporter “If you want to make love, you go behind closed doors, not in the middle of a family restaurant.” The women felt that they had been targeted because of their sexuality and described the incident on Facebook. The article went on to indicate that “The next day, Terre Chartrand and Evan Coole and a handful of others created a Facebook group, Taking Action Against Homophobia in Waterloo Region. Within hours the site had gained hundreds of followers and by last night [Wednesday] the group had more than 1,000 fans.” Chartrand and Coole said that homophobia was common. Coole said that “the gay community should be able to show public displays of affection like anyone else” and felt that there was a double standard. The article mentioned that “The group also plans a dance party on Waterloo Public Square on April 10 at 2 p.m. They then plan to walk up King Street and stage a peaceful kiss-in at the corner of King Street and Princess Street” [where the Huether Hotel was located]. Aldys portrayed herself as a victim in an interview on March 31, suggesting that the group was trying to “ruin her character”.

2010, April 6 (Tuesday) * K-W Record: Kiss rally gains momentum. Organizers of protest against homophobia hope they can unite activist groups

Kiss rally gains momentum. Organizers of protest against homophobia hope they can unite activist groups. This news article by Liz Monteiro (Record staff) expanded upon her article from April 1. The article reported that that the “two women who are at the centre of the heated debate about kissing in public have received hate mail” and “are trying to keep a low profile and are not responding to negative emails or phone calls.” The article also announced that the associated Facebook group — Taking Action Against Homophobia in Waterloo Region — had amassed almost 3,000 supporters by the time that the article was written. The article also reported that the organizers of the group, Terre Chartrand and Evan Coole “say they hope the rally unites other groups in the community who are fighting violence against women and hate in ethnic communities.” The article noted that “The rally — Stepping Out! For a safe, accessible and a hate-free community begins at the Waterloo Public Square at 2:00 p.m. with a dance party” to be followed by a march north on King Street to Princess Street (where the Huether Hotel was located) for a kiss-in on the street.

2010, Spring * Waterloo Region Rainbow Coalition (WRRC) Germination

"In the spring of 2010, a few of us got talking about some of the issues that we had been observing in our community. Like many other people in the local Rainbow community, we were all troubled by some of the stories of discrimination, harassment and isolation that we had experienced and heard about from others. We were also concerned with the lack of understanding and acceptance of other people’s identities within the Rainbow community. In response, we created this group to strengthen and embolden our community."
