2001, January 17 (Wednesday) * GLOW: Skeleton in the Closet?

Terry Pender, a reporter for the K-W Record informs GLOW that under the Freedom of Information Act, they had secured documents from the RCMP indicating that WUGLM had been the focus of police surveilance in the early 1970s. Jim Parrott was interviewed by the reporter. The article is published on 2001, April 21.

The cover title of the Festival booklet read: "Rainbow Reels Queer Film Festival March 2001. Queer Culture on Film. WPIRG's 1st Annual Queer Film Festival, March 15 - 18, 2001, University of Waterloo Davis Centre 1302." A total of seven films were shown. The second page of the Festival booklet began: "Thanks for coming! We'd like to welcome all of you to Rainbow Reels Queer Film Festival. We suspect that it's the first of its kind in the Waterloo area and definitely long overdue. What have the tri-cities been waiting for? We're big enough, smart enough, and dammit, good-looking enough too. Besides, launching a 'first' annual film festival in the year marking thirty years of GLOW (Gays and Lesbians Of Waterloo) was too good celebratory event to pass up. ... The Rainbow Reels Organizers: Usha Bhatia, Vanessa Duffy, Trevor Fenton, David Manning, Daryl Novak, Mark Schaan, Steven Singer, and Ron Welker. [And a special thanks to the designer of our logo & poster, Scott Pigeau.]"

2001, April 21 (Saturday) * GLOW: K-W Record Exposé of RCMP Surveillance

Terry Pender, with the K-W Record, reported that more than 2,000 pages of once-secret documents had been obtained by The Record under the federal Access to Information Act. These documents made it clear that many groups and individuals on university campuses in Waterloo and Guelph had been under RCMP surveillance from August 1967 to December 1983. Among those under RCMP surveillance was WUGLM. Jim Parrott was one of many people interviewed by the reporter.

On September 9, 2001, the Friends of Dorothy Bowling League began their Season 3, which ran from September 9, 2001 to April 28, 2002 (32 weeks). League Fees: $10.00 September to December; $11.00 January on. The League had a Charity Tournament on March 9, 2002, and a Bowling Banquet on May 11, 2002. In Season 3, the League had 43 regular bowlers and 8 substitute bowlers, making 11 teams: Wizards of Odd, Rat Pack, Ditzy Divas, Right Up Dorothy's Alley, Wicked Witches, Warrior Princess, No Place Like Homo, Gutter Girls, Ruby Strikers, Dorothy's Dilemma, and Flying Monkeys.
