1984, September 21 * UW Imprint Column: A Different Light Begins As Everyone Knows...

A weekly Imprint column called A Different Light, written by GLLOW member Alan Yoshioka, began; in the beginning he used the pen name “Zeke Gerrard”, but with the Volume 7, Number 34, 1985, March 29 (Friday) issue of Imprint he began using his real name. This column stirred up a lot of gay-bashing letters to the Imprint, to which GLOW members (Chris Gordon, etc.) routinely responded. The very first installment of this column ran under the title Everyone knows... and appeared in the Volume 7, Number 10, 1984, September 21 (Friday) issue of Imprint. It had that title until the Volume 7, Number 17, 1984, November 9 (Friday) issue of Imprint when the author announced that the following week the column would have a different title. The title of the column became A different light beginning with the the Volume 7, Number 18, 1984, November 16 (Friday) issue of Imprint. The column ran until around March 27 1986; Alan graduated a few weeks after that. The second last column that Yoshioka wrote was in the 1986, March 21 (Friday), and in the 1986, March 27 issue, he reprinted the 1985, March 29 (Friday) column, in which he had first used his real name. Beginning with the Volume 9, Number 11, 1986, September 26 issue of Imprint, the column was taken over by another UW student, who wrote as “Chris Gerrard.” The last column under that name appeared in the Volume 10, Number 34, 1988, April 1 issue of Imprint; the identity of the writer was never revealed in the column.

With the September 21 issue of Imprint, a weekly column with the title Everyone knows... began; it was written by GLLOW member Alan Yoshioka, at first under the pen name “Zeke Gerrard”. With the current issue (November 16), he changed the title to A Different Light. This November 16 (1984) column discusses the origins and rationale behind using a pen name and opinions on ‘coming out’ to friends, colleagues and family.
