1980, October 3 (Friday) * University of Waterloo: Imprint: Screening of Cruising Condemned
On p.4 of the Imprint,
Vol.3, No.12, 1980, October 3 (Friday), there was a brief piece
by Liz Wood entitled “Cruising in bad taste” which noted that an upcoming film in the
“Fed Flicks” series (sponsored by the UW Federation of Students) would be
Cruising.
The writer indicated that “The movie, which depicts a particular gay lifestyle in much the same
exploitive manner as Hollywood depicted blacks for decades, has been roundly panned by critics and
minority groups alike for the highly inaccurate and biased (and potentially dangerous) view it presents.
The general attitude has been that gays and other minority groups deserve better in a supposedly
enlightened era of film-making. They do deserve better. The decision to show the film is certainly
even less enlightened than the film itself.”

1980, October 10 (Friday) * University of Waterloo: Imprint: Screening of Cruising Defended
On p.9 of the Imprint,
Vol.3, No.13, 1980, October 10 (Friday), there was a letter to
the Editor by Ken Lalonde entitled “Letter from a happy fan” which commented on
several things. His letter began “Congratulations to BENT for airing ‘Cruising’.
I don't agree with the scenario the film depicts, but if BENT starts to bow to pressure groups
concerning the content of these flicks, it will be no better than the Ontario Censor Board (and gain
as much respect).”

On p.2 of the Imprint,
Vol.3, No.15, 1980, October 24 (Friday), in the “news
shorts” area, there was a piece entitled “GLOW: one more attempt to make it work”, which
discussed difficulties that GLOW had been having in continuing its on-campus dances. Fred
Schubert of GLOW referred to the upcoming Hallowe'en dance as a last attempt to make it work, citing
problems with competition, pointing out that other groups had folded because of this competition. He
indicated that GLOW was determined to make the dance a success, and that 300 posters had been printed up
and they were going to try to keep them up on the bulletin boards this time, noting that in the past they
had often been torn down. The article concluded with “The dance (‘outrageous constumes a
must’) is to be held, complete with a Toronto disc-jockey, in the third-floor Humanities Lounge at
8:30 on October 31st.”

On p.5 of the Imprint,

Hysteria. Much of the article was based on an interview with Moe Lyons
[a prominent member of the Lesbian Organization of Kitchener (LOOK)], who was a member
of the eight-women collective responsible for the magazine. The magazine was described as “a
vehicle for Southwestern Ontario women to express themselves and interact with each other.”
